Sodom are rightfully one of the most revered Thrash bands around, and they've been unstoppable since 1982. At last, Sodom are coming to Australia. The shows start in just a week and I had the chance to speak to Thomas 'Tom Angelripper' Such recently to discuss the tour. Despite the phone connection going out after just a few minutes, there was time to cover plenty of ground.
Pyro: Hey mate, how are you?
Tom 'Angelripper' Such: Good, everything's fine.
Pyro: The first thing I want to say is cheers for your time. Second of all, after 25 years a s a band Sodom are finally playing in Australia and there's quite a buzz among Sodomaniacs here. Are you looking forward to the trip?
Tom 'Angelripper' Such: Yes, I'm really looking forward to it. After 25 years, we finally get a chance to play over there. I don't know why it's taken to long to come to Australia but we can't wait.
Pyro: Have you planned much sight-seeing while you're in Australia?
Tom 'Angelripper' Such: I would love to but we have a pretty strict plan and a schedule to stick to. It's always a problem for us. We've never seen too much from any country but we do try.
Pyro: Sodom are playing a show in Hobart, Tasmania (in a venue with a capacity of 350). This show is being filmed for a DVD release. Is there anything special planned for this show?
Tom 'Angelripper' Such: Not for the show itself. You can't compare it to Germany when we put on shows with Pyrotechnics, you know, but when we record the show for the DVD, we want it to be somewhere special. We didn't want to do a show in say Germany, in front of an audience where everyone there's waiting for the headliners. Tasmania is a special place and I know that not a lot of bands have played there before.
Also, for this release we're gonna try and play Bangkok or perhaps Jakarta. We want a special place to record the shows. It will be a big part of the next DVD.
Pyro: So the show's going on the Lords of Depravity DVD: Part 2?
Tom 'Angelripper' Such: Yeah it is. Everything is gonna be fine. We'll go back to Germany to check the material we have. It's my plan to do something very special for the next DVD.
Pyro: Sounds god. Regarding the next Sodom album, have you started working on it yet?
Tom 'Angelripper' Such: Yes, we have couple of songs so far. We are hoping to release it maybe the beginning of 2008, but we have to wait for the DVD. We're still working on the new songs. We're rehearsing all the time and I'm really satisfied with the new material. I think it's getting more aggressive and straight to the point. You can't compare the new songs to any others. It's completely new but we'll always keep the style and the spirit of Sodom.
Pyro: Back to the Aussie tour, as far as the setlists go, how long will Sodom be playing at each of the shows?
Tom 'Angelripper' Such: I'm not certain, it'll be different from show to show, and it's going to be hard to this tour because we've never been to Australia before. We have to play all the classics like 'Agent Orange', 'Outbreak Of Evil' and we have to promote the latest album by playing songs from it, so it's always a hard position. We have so much material. The running time will be between an hour and an hour and a half. We'll change the setlist from show to show.
Pyro: Any chance you'll be playing 'Conjuration' on any of the shows?
Tom 'Angelripper' Such: No, we didn't rehearse it. The other members of Sodom can't play all of the old stuff. We're gonna try to do something from 'In The Sign Of Evil', 'Obsessed By Cruelty', but 'Conjuration' is definitely not in the setlist.
Pyro: Damn. Oh well. You're being supported nationally by Gospel Of The Horns, have you had a chance to hear them?
Tom 'Angelripper' Such: No. I haven't even got any information about the support bands yet. It's hard to find albums from Australian bands in Germany.
